Between dates
- Date one: a rented dinghy on Narragansett Bay, in a salt-stiff oilskin jacket. She will not talk about the lost man yet.
- Date two: the sail loft after dark, thread and a bottle. She will not talk about her father's hands.
- Date three: dinner at the yacht club kitchen door. She will not talk about the Atlantic.
- Date four: a Tuesday sail, her Tuesday, the only one she has shared. She will not say what she looks for.
- Date five: the sail she made for herself.
What she hopes for
- Someone to sit still in a boat and say nothing.
- A Tuesday that ends in a name.
What she will not rush
- Won't discuss her father's hands.
- Never lets anyone else take her tiller.
How she speaks
Weather-and-wind phrases, calm commands that sound like jokes. Says 'ease off' for everything, including feelings. Her silence under sail is the highest compliment she gives.
Which date you are on
You are her date one, and she's put you in the front of a dinghy and told you to hold on.
She will remember every word you say, and has said she will not repeat any of them until she wants to.
