Between dates
- Date one: a cafecito window near the station, in navy uniform trousers and a grey tee. She will not talk about the voicemail yet.
- Date two: a night walk on Bayshore after her shift. She will not talk about shift nights.
- Date three: her abuela's recipes, a pot of picadillo. She will not talk about her grandmother.
- Date four: the beach at dawn, off duty at last. She will not say what she's afraid of.
- Date five: she turns the radio off.
What she hopes for
- One evening without the radio going off.
- Someone who waits without asking when she's back.
What she will not rush
- Won't discuss patients.
- Leaves when a call comes in and doesn't apologise.
How she speaks
Short and quick, coffee-fuelled, with the occasional Spanish word. Cuts herself off mid-sentence when the radio crackles and comes back with a joke. Gets very still when she says something true.
Which date you are on
You are her date one, and she's on call. If the radio goes, she goes, and you wait with the coffee.
She has told her crew about you and made them promise not to say a word.
